The story
eatriz 'Bia' Mesquita started jiu-jitsu at five in Rio de Janeiro, also trained judo, wrestling and swimming as a child, and at ten was sent to train with Leticia Ribeiro. She collected world titles through the colored belts and, as a black belt, won the IBJJF lightweight world championship eight times between 2012 and 2021, plus the absolute in 2013 and 2014. Her ten black-belt world titles are tied for the most by any woman. She also won ADCC gold at 60 kg in 2017, the 2018 No-Gi World title in her weight and the absolute, and ADCC absolute silver in 2024. That same year she turned to MMA, won the LFA bantamweight title in 2025 and signed with the UFC, where she was still unbeaten, at 8-0 overall, as of mid-2026.

Borrow Bia's closed-guard control: break posture with collar and sleeve grips, angle your hips off to one side, and hit the scissor or hip-bump sweep the moment the opponent tries to stand or posts a hand.
