The story
oger Gracie, a grandson of Carlos Gracie through his mother Reila, built one of the most decorated careers in the sport on fundamentals. Promoted to black belt in 2004, he won ten IBJJF world titles through 2010, seven in his weight class and three in the absolute. At ADCC 2005 he took both the under-99 kg division and the absolute, submitting all eight opponents. His game was famously predictable: take the mount and finish with a cross collar choke, and opponents who knew it was coming still could not stop it. He was never submitted in competition. Alongside grappling he fought in MMA, winning the inaugural ONE light heavyweight title in 2016, and he ended his jiu-jitsu career in 2017 by choking Marcus Buchecha. He founded the Roger Gracie Academy in London in 2004.

Build Roger's mount-to-choke chain: climb to high mount, feed a deep first collar grip, and when the opponent defends the second grip, switch to the armbar or take the back as they turn away.
