The story

Saulo Ribeiro came to jiu-jitsu from judo, taking it up at 15 in Manaus to add submissions to his throws. After moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1991 he trained under Royler Gracie at Gracie Humaitá and received his black belt in 1995. He won five IBJJF world titles between 1997 and 2002 across four weight classes, from middleweight to super-heavyweight, and took ADCC gold at 88 kg in 2000 and 2003. After ADCC 2009 he retired from professional grappling, later collecting masters world titles. He is just as well known as a teacher: his book Jiu-Jitsu University sets out a curriculum from white to black belt, and with his brother Xande he built the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association and the University of Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego.
