The story
orn in Anguilla, Carlos Newton moved to Canada at eight and went to high school in Toronto's Jane and Finch area. He competed in jiu-jitsu out of the city's Samurai Club, then followed his training partner to Warrior MMA in Newmarket. His 1996 debut was against a man at least 75 pounds heavier, and he lost only when exhaustion set in. In Japan he won the Vale Tudo Japan title and had a classic grappling battle with Kazushi Sakuraba at Pride 3, and in May 2001 he choked out Pat Miletich at UFC 31 to become the first Canadian UFC champion. He lost the belt six months later when Matt Hughes slammed him and both men appeared to black out. He later beat Renzo Gracie in Pride, retired in 2010 and opened his own gym in Pickering.
