The story
huck Liddell wrestled in NCAA Division I at Cal Poly and went 20-2 as a kickboxer, and he combined the two into one of the first successful sprawl-and-brawl games in MMA: stop the takedown, stay on the feet and throw heavy hands. He knocked out Randy Couture in 2005 to win the UFC light heavyweight title and defended it four times, including a second win over Tito Ortiz, before Quinton Jackson knocked him out in 2007. His 10 knockouts are still the most in UFC light heavyweight history. Karate and kajukenbo shaped his striking, which leaned on his hands with the occasional head kick. He entered the UFC Hall of Fame in 2009, retired in 2010 after a run of knockout losses, and fought once more in 2018.

Treat your wrestling as defence: sprawl hard, circle off the fence and get back to your feet so the fight stays standing. Kickboxing and MMA students can drill sprawl-and-stand-up reps that end with a counter punch as the opponent rises.
