The story

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, into a boxing family: his father Floyd Sr. and his uncles Roger and Jeff all fought professionally. After Olympic bronze in 1996 he turned pro and won the WBC super featherweight title in only his 18th fight, and The Ring named him Fighter of the Year at 21. He went on to collect 15 major world titles in five weight classes, beating Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Canelo Álvarez and Manny Pacquiao. His last professional fight, against mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor in 2017, took him to 50-0. CompuBox rates him the most accurate puncher it has tracked. In February 2026 he announced a comeback, but the planned Pacquiao rematch has slipped to 2027 at the earliest. Outside the ring he has had repeated trouble with the law over domestic matters.

Learn the shoulder roll: lead shoulder high to cover the chin, lead hand low and rear hand ready. Let the punch roll off the shoulder and answer with a pull counter, Mayweather's trademark right hand.
