The story

Orono Por Muang Ubon was born Somkid Deomprakon in Buriram to a Thai mother and an American father; a trainer named him after the Venezuelan boxer Rafael Orono, whom he resembled. He began training at ten and joined the Por Muang Ubon camp at fifteen. A southpaw who kept moving forward and could take punishment, he beat Ramon Dekkers on points in 1992 and again in 1995. He won the Lumpinee Stadium lightweight title in December 1994, defended it twice, and was named the 1994 Sports Writers Association of Thailand Fighter of the Year. He also stopped a young John Wayne Parr in 1997, and his bouts were voted Fight of the Year in 1995 and 1998. He kept fighting until 2017 and now trains fighters.

Walk forward the southpaw way: keep your lead foot outside the opponent's, stay behind a tight guard, and dig knees to the body once you are inside.
