The story

Conor McGregor, a Dubliner who trains at SBG Ireland, held the Cage Warriors featherweight and lightweight titles at the same time before joining the UFC. He won the interim featherweight belt against Chad Mendes in 2015, then knocked out José Aldo in 13 seconds, the fastest knockout in a UFC title fight. A year later he stopped Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title and became the first fighter to hold UFC belts in two divisions at once. A left-handed southpaw, he is best known for a pull-back counter that catches opponents as they lunge in. He has also lost big fights to Nate Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov and, twice, Dustin Poirier. In July 2026, returning after an 18-month anti-doping suspension, he lost to Max Holloway when his knee gave out in the first round. Outside the cage he has had repeated trouble with the law and the courts.

Steal this

Lean just out of range as the opponent lunges, then fire the rear hand straight back down the middle. Southpaws in boxing and kickboxing class can drill the pull counter against a partner's jab and lead hook.
