Also called Gutwrench, Par terre roll

The gut wrench is a par terre turn: lock your arms around the waist of an opponent who is face down on the mat, then roll them across your body onto their back. Each turn that exposes their back to the mat scores two points, so a good gut wrench can win a match from one spell on top.

Satori's coaches are filming every technique, full speed and slow motion from two angles. Until it's up, the diagram shows the movement step by step.

How to do it

  1. 1From the top in par terre, kneel beside the opponent's hip with your chest on their back.
  2. 2Lock your hands around their waist just below the ribs, grip tight.
  3. 3Pull their hips tight to you and keep your own hips low and close.
  4. 4Drive your hips in and roll them across your body so their back passes toward the mat.
  5. 5Keep the lock and chain the next turn until the referee stops you.
Common mistakes
  • Leaving space between your chest and their back, which kills the leverage.
  • Trying to turn them with the arms instead of the hips.
  • Letting go after one turn instead of chaining the next.

Safety: Keep your partner's head and neck clear of the roll, build speed slowly and work only on mats.

Drills

Drill it

Your partner gives light resistance on all fours; lock, turn, reset and turn again for 30 seconds, then switch.
