Also called Snapdown, Front headlock

The snap down pulls the opponent's head sharply toward the mat from a tie-up, so they fall forward onto their hands and knees. From there you hold a front headlock and circle behind them to score. If they fight it by standing tall, their legs open up for your shot instead.

Satori's coaches are filming every technique, full speed and slow motion from two angles. Until it's up, the diagram shows the movement step by step.

How to do it

  1. 1Take a collar tie with one hand and control the opposite elbow or wrist with the other.
  2. 2Push into the opponent so they push back.
  3. 3As they lean in, drop your weight and snap their head down toward the mat.
  4. 4Step back as you pull so they fall forward rather than onto you.
  5. 5Lock the front headlock, keep your chest on their head and circle behind them.
Common mistakes
  • Pulling with the arms only instead of dropping your weight.
  • Staying square in front of them, where they can shoot into your legs.
  • Letting their head come up before you have circled behind.

Safety: Snap with your hands on the back of the head rather than wrenching the neck, and let partners fall onto their hands at a controlled speed.

Drills

Drill it

From a collar tie, your partner leans in with light pressure; snap them down to their knees, spin behind to score, then switch roles.
